Searching for an online casino in Canada turns up the same page over and over: a top-ten table, a row of logos, a big dollar figure beside each one. What almost none of them show you is the wagering requirement attached to that figure — which is the number that decides whether the offer is worth anything at all.

Gambling in Canada is regulated by the provinces, not federally, which is why the answer changes depending on where you are sitting. The Criminal Code lets each province conduct and manage gambling within its own borders, and each one has taken a different view of what that means online.

The clearest case is Ontario. Since 2022 it has run an open, licensed market through iGaming Ontario, where private operators apply for a licence and serve Ontario residents under provincial rules. If you are in Ontario, a licensed operator is the lowest-risk option available to you, and the registry is public.

Everywhere else, the province runs its own platform — PlayNow in British Columbia and Manitoba, Espacejeux in Quebec, PlayAlberta in Alberta, Atlantic Lottery in the east. Alongside those, many Canadians play at operators licensed offshore. That has been a grey area for a long time: enforcement has historically focused on operators rather than on individual players. It is not the same as a licensed provincial product, and you should understand that before you deposit.

How to choose, in the right order

  • Can you get your money out? Look at withdrawal methods and stated processing times before anything else. A generous bonus at a casino with an awkward cashier is a bad trade.
